Starcraft is a brand that has been around for years, and many of us remember playing the RTS games for hours and hours. Well now, they've released a tabletop miniature game, and we're going to talk about what it is, and why you should get excited.
Starcraft was originally a real-time strategy video game, in which you manage piles of resources and command your soldiers around the battlefield. This translates very well to tabletop, and will be able to keep the essence of the video game while providing a fresh take. There are three iconic factions to choose from: Terran, Protoss, and Zerg.
Each unit from these factions has a "mineral" point value and takes up a certain amount of space in your army. You can only carry so many units and use so many points, the amount of which depends on the scale of game you are playing. Where Starcraft differs from other games, it also deals with a secondary resource called Vespene gas. This can be used to use upgrades on your army, open more slots, and more! The amount depends on how many points you bring.
The game is similar to others in that it has a movement, assault, combat and scoring phase. These are how you not only deploy your army, but begin attacking the other team. A neat concept this game is bringing is the "engaged" mechanic. If two units are within 1 inch of each other, they must attack each other and cannot attack other units. Damage works similar to other tabletop games, with rolls above a certain threshold being called a hit, and modifiers that can be applied to change that threshold. Finally, scoring is determined by players proximity to different mission objectives.
All in all, it seems like a fun experience. Games can take anywhere from an hour or two, depending how large a game you're playing. You'll find elements of other tabletop game in here, but with a twist that hopefully new and returning Starcraft players will like! The game is out now and available for order at gamebridge.ca
